Summary
Drama based on a true story, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Ray McAnally and Brenda Fricker. Christy Brown was born with cerebral palsy in 1932 into a large Dublin family. Poverty and ignorance add to young Christy's difficulties, but he is determined to express himself using his left foot, the only part of his body he has control over.

A superb movie chronicling the life of writer and artist Christy Brown, who was born with cerebral palsy, portrayed with astonishing passion and sensitivity by Daniel Day-Lewis. All concerned were rightly showered with praise and plaudits at the time, including Oscars for Day-Lewis and ex-Casualty staff nurse Brenda Fricker as Christy's stoical mum. There were some low rumblings that Day-Lewis's role should have been given to a disabled actor, a view which won some sympathy, but nothing can be taken away from this all-round great movie. It's also notable for the penultimate screen appearance of the marvellous Ray McAnally.
