Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her directorial debut with this all-star adaptation of Elena Ferrante's 2008 novel. Olivia Colman plays Leda, an academic holidaying alone in Greece. When she encounters Nina (Dakota Johnson), who has lost her infant daughter on the beach, Leda is reminded of her own past and specific episodes she never overcame. As expected, Colman captivates with her trademark humour, while Johnson's Nina is intriguingly enigmatic, and Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard and Paul Mescal appear in supporting roles. However, Jessie Buckley feels miscast as the younger Leda, who appears in lengthy flashbacks, and is unconvincing as a younger version of Colman. And while Gyllenhaal's direction is assured, the film's absorbing start sadly gives way to an ambling second hour that deprives it of enduring impact.
