Summary

A heist-gone-wrong results in scuzzy low-rent criminal Connie Niklas (Robert Pattinson brutally playing against type) desperately attempting to spring his mentally-disabled brother Nick (Bennie Safdie) from New York's notorious Rikers Island prison. After a misfiring attempt to acquire $10,000 for his brother's parole, the hyperactive Connie finds himself on the lam, hiding out where he can and forging unlikely alliances with untrustworthy crims around the city.

The 1980s yuppie-nightmare movie gets a rinse and spin along with the 90s heist-gone-wrong saga in this fresh and unpredictable crime story. Robert Pattinson plays Constantine "Connie" Nikas, a small-fry New York criminal whose ingenious bank heist ends in disaster, with his injured, learning-disabled accomplice and brother Nick (the film's co-director Benny Safdie) under police watch in hospital. Connie hatches a plan to spring him, but events quickly spiral out of control to near-farcical degrees. But even as it reaches fever pitch - a key scene involves a funfair and a bottle of liquid LSD - Pattinson, in possibly his best performance to date, maintains a steely focus throughout. Though he superficially resembles the moody neon-noir-style hero patented by Ryan Gosling in Drive, with which Good Time shares a fascination for moody 80s electro-pop, Pattinson mines the role for delicious black comedy instead, as it transpires that this would-be criminal mastermind is actually a moron.
