Santa's been abducted from the North Pole, and it's up to his head of security Dwayne Johnson and tech-savvy scoundrel Chris Evans to find him and save Christmas in this disappointing action comedy. As the mismatched duo embark on their rescue mission, they encounter wicked witches, hulking snowmen and dastardly plans to hijack Christmas Eve that are decidedly more naughty than nice. On paper, it would have made a perfectly serviceable half-hour animation, but a running order over two hours in the company of a brace of leaden humans won't leave many viewers feeling especially festive. The spy spoof tropes are lazy and predictable, most of the gags in the script land with a dull thud, and Johnson, in particular, is an underwhelming hero. JK Simmons raises an occasional smile as a keep-fit enthusiast Santa, and Kiernan Shipka (star of Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) has fun as a witchy foe, but they're rare bright spots in an otherwise formulaic yarn that brings very little in the way of glad tidings.
