Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Though it tells a familiar tale of forbidden love, this slick and heartfelt wartime drama is a timely reminder of continued Soviet prejudice against LGBTQ+ people. Set during the Cold War and based on a true story, Firebird follows a young private (co-writer Tom Prior), who falls in love with a handsome fighter pilot (Oleg Zagorodnii) while working on an air base in Soviet-occupied Estonia. Snatching romantic moments by cover of night, the couple soon find themselves monitored by the KGB, with the threat of exposure ever-present. The plot will be recognisable to anybody who's seen Brokeback Mountain, and many of the dramatic developments are based in queer cinematic convention. But director Peeter Rebane artfully lenses the earnest story, and Prior and Zagorodnii make for hugely likeable lovers. Their characters' efforts to find happiness in a discriminatory society are genuinely moving, and the odd iffy wig and meandering accent only add to the charm of a film that has style and sincerity to spare.
