Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The man behind The Simpsons Movie, David Silverman, teams up with co-director Raymond S Persi for this cute adventure from Cinesite, the studio who made 2019's The Addams Family. Rachel Bloom and Adam Devine voice rabbity creatures known as "flummels", who have a doughnut-like hole in their tummy, and bumble through life on one of the Galapagos Islands in 1835. When a time-travel accident transports the pair to modern-day Shanghai, they befriend a scientist's pooch, Clarance (Ken Jeong), and try to find their way back home while also saving their species from extinction. This above-average computer-animated effort benefits substantially from its superior voice cast, with Zazie Beetz and Catherine O'Hara also featuring. The dynamic of its central duo owes a clear debt to Trolls, and the critters spin round like Sonic the Hedgehog, meaning this is pretty derivative stuff. There's a chaotic feel to the storytelling, too, which can mean it's difficult to stay engaged. However, strong visual gags and surreal interludes liven things up, and the film's gang of long-dead animals - dubbed the "Extinctables" - is a nice touch.
