Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Actor Vincent D'Onofrio's second film as director (following 2010's Don't Go in the Woods) is a western that reimagines the demise of gunslinger Billy the Kid (played by Dane DeHaan), as seen through the eyes of a fictional 14-year-old. Wide-eyed teen Rio (Jake Schur) has just killed his violent father while defending his mother, and has fled with his older sister Sara (D'Onofrio's daughter Leila George). The pair run into and befriend Billy, who is quickly captured by Sheriff Pat Garrett (Ethan Hawke), and they tag along with the lawmen to Santa Fe. A rueful DeHaan and a world-weary Hawke bring some grizzled conviction to their portrayals, though Chris Pratt is miscast as a seldom-seen antagonist. The film's honeyed cinematography and gruff stylings mean it often looks the part, but it moves too hurriedly, failing to conjure the atmosphere or majesty of the best of the genre.
