Summary

Sports drama based on a true story, starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo. Olympic gold medal-winning wrestlers Mark and Dave Schultz are invited by wealthy philanthropist and fan John du Pont to come and live on his estate and train a team for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Mark accepts the offer, but du Pont's benevolence hides an obsession that will have ramifications for both brothers.

Although Foxcatcher is inspired by real events which were widely reported at the time, it's best to learn as little about it as possible in order to fully savour this superb film's surprises and shocks. For those who insist on knowing a little more, here's the gist: in the late 1980s, none-too-bright professional wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) accepts an invitation to build up a top-class team for weird billionaire sponsor John du Pont (a nearly unrecognisable Steve Carell). Schultz is soon followed to du Pont's Foxcatcher estate by his smarter older brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo), also a wrestler and coach. However, du Pont is a warped control freak who may be interested in more than just the younger Schultz's sporting prowess. The result is an American tragedy that could have come straight out of the pages of a book by Truman Capote - who was the subject of director Bennett Miller's first film. Tatum is on searing form, and Carrell really knocks it out of the park with his first straight dramatic role. Exquisitely calibrated art direction, sound design and cinematography gild the lily.
