Our Score
As a dumbed-down version of the Greek myth, this Disney animation has its moments, but few that will appeal to students of legend. Here Hercules, son of almighty Zeus, is brought up as a mortal, thanks to the machinations of Underworld ruler Hades, and has to pass tests to prove both his manhood and his godhood. Some of the draughtsmanship of the animation is wonderful, as are the voiceovers of James Woods and Danny DeVito, but the powerful original idea is sapped by the need to make it a teenage comic-strip cartoon.

Summary

The son of Zeus, king of the Greek gods, is sent to Earth to be raised as a human. When he learns of his immortal heritage, he discovers he can only reclaim his position among the gods by becoming a true hero, so he embarks on a series of adventures and battles fearsome monsters to prove his worth. Disney animated adventure, with the voices of Tate Donovan, Danny DeVito, James Woods and Rip Torn.
