Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A social misfit at a rugby-mad, all-boys boarding school in Ireland finds unlikely friendship with his new star-player roommate in this serio-comic coming-of-age saga. As the only one on campus uninterested in the oval ball, geekily androgynous Ned (Fionn O'Shea) is mercilessly picked on, and so expects the worst when new transfer Conor (Nicholas Galitzine), a classy number ten with a chequered personal history, is assigned to share with him. It's not hard to guess where writer/director John Butler is going with any of this, as subsequent events blend rites of passage and sports-movie formula with an open mind about teenage sexuality. Still, the central duo are funny, sensitive, likeable and troubled as and when required, with Sherlock's Andrew Scott doing sterling work as the inspirational English teacher urging both of them towards self-confidence in the face of the school's manly emphasis on sporting success. Lovingly done, if a tad predictable, and the choice 1980s indie soundtrack features the Housemartins and Prefab Sprout, though (the film's title notwithstanding) nothing from the Smiths.
