Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis has hinted that there may be secret returning characters in season 4 of the hit Apple TV comedy.

The acclaimed series is returning from a three-year hiatus, with a number of familiar faces in tow, including Ted (Sudeikis), Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Keeley (Juno Temple) and more.

However, in recent months, fans have expressed disappointment over notable absences from season 4's cast list, including Nick Mohammed's Nate, Phil Dunster's Jamie Tartt, and Toheeb Jimoh's Sam Obisanya.

Not all hope is lost, though! In an interview with Radio Times, Sudeikis teased that he would "expect" some unannounced reprisals in the upcoming episodes – but warned against becoming overly invested in any particular idea.

"I would expect [secret characters] as a person who knows how, or likes to think knows how, TV works," he explained. "I guess [that's] the best way to put it."

Sudeikis added: "But I do believe that expectations can sometimes breed contempt... so it's up to you."

The latter comment probably refers to the numerous occasions in which high-profile films and TV shows have taken a different route to what fans predicted – and suffered backlash as a result.

Therefore, if there are returning guests in Ted Lasso season 4, it would be better to accept them as pleasant surprises, rather than risk disappointment over strong belief in a specific theory.

At the start of the year, former Ted Lasso star Mohammed told Radio Times that any rumours of Nate's return are entirely "speculative," but expressed interest in a new chapter for the somewhat troubled character.

"With the right support network and so on, people can get through stuff and are able to cope a lot better," he said of Nate's redemption at the end of season 3.

"But I feel like some demons never fully go away, maybe. But we’ll have to wait and see if and when the writers write that, or not."
