Episode 1: Episode 1

Summary

Tom's 15-year-old daughter Jess has started a relationship with schoolmate Ollie. When he meets the boy's mum Beth in a chance encounter, a spark is lit between the two married people and both their families' lives are turned upside down. Drama, starring Dominic Cooper and Romola Garai

Review

David Brown

This midlife relationship drama introduces us early on to the formula devised by sexologist Jack Morin that “attraction plus obstacles equals excitement”. In this instance, the frisson is between fitness trainer Beth (Romola Garai) and GP Tom (Dominic Cooper), with the barrier being that they’re both married to other people. As for the thrill, that may be for subsequent episodes to deliver. Because in this opener, writer Danny Brocklehurst (Fool Me Once, Brassic) is still assembling the key ingredients of disillusionment and extramarital flirtation in the hope of bringing his mixture to the boil over the remainder of this six-part series.

For now, an early encounter following a vehicular prang and a few lingering glances set the scene for an illicit entanglement that will undoubtedly escalate tomorrow at 9pm.
