At just six episodes long, ITV's Adultery sure takes its viewers on quite the rollercoaster of emotions.

As it says in its title, the series charts the initial buds of an affair right through its secret meetings and proclamations of love between Tom (Dominic Cooper) and Beth (Romola Garai).

The final episode delivered quite the run of surprises as the pair's adulterous actions sent shockwaves through each family and ultimately, they had to make the decision whether to take this fantasy scenario into reality. It's an ending that will surely get people talking and possibly wondering if there's set to be any further episodes uncovering what happens in the future for everyone involved.

But will Adultery be returning for a potential second season? Read on for everything we know so far.

As of now, a second season of Adultery has not been confirmed – and everything indicates that it was envisioned as a limited series.

Adultery launched on 25 October with its six episodes available to stream in full on ITVX and by the end of the season, big decisions had been made for our main characters.

It turns out that series creator Danny Brocklehurst had penned two potential endings for the series, saying that it had become "the most talked about aspect of the whole thing". He said in a press pack for the series: "In the end, we went with what we felt was the most truthful. People will respond to that however they respond to it. Some people will not want it to end that way.

"The main thing is that an affair, no matter what kind of an affair it is, is essentially built on a fantasy. You are sneaking around but not in a real situation. Then when it ends, even if you deeply love that person, and even if you spend the rest of your lives together, the fantasy is now over, and you must face reality. That’s the theme of the show."

So, while the ending may prove divisive, it does finish on quite the final note.

What have the team behind Adultery said about a potential season 2?

Although it appears to be a common trend right now for limited series to be labelled as such but go on to be renewed for more, it does seem as though Adultery was crafted as a one-and-done series.

When asked if there was more story left in these characters after the ending of season 1, executive producer Preethi Mavahalli explained: "Our sense is that this is its complete story. But never say never. There were some interesting discussions about the two potential endings. We didn’t know until we got to the edit and even then, there was some debate over what it should feel like.

"I felt different things as I watched it than I had when I read it. I think the ending will make people talk. Some people will be happy, some people won’t. It depends on what you want for these characters."

Viewers will certainly get riled up watching the six-parter but when discussing what he hopes will surprise viewers about Adultery, director Will Sinclair said: "You get drawn in by human stories. That is surprising. It doesn’t need the mechanics of a thriller or a spy drama. And this isn’t something I’ve got bored of watching even though I’ve seen it thousands of times.

"It’s been, ‘Oh, I hadn’t noticed that before. Have you seen what Matthew’s doing in the back there. Look at Dom over there.’ There are all these little nuggets, little subtleties, and I’m still discovering new things that I really love about it. It’s that depth that I think people will find surprising. If they give it time, I think it will fly."

What would a potential Adultery season 2 be about?

With Tom and Beth choosing to give their relationship a shot past the fantasy of their affair, things ended with the pair having their second official date. From the looks of the closing scenes of the series, the pair were getting accustomed to their new lives co-parenting their children but that newfound dynamic likely wouldn't be the easiest.

If a season 2 were to be green lit, we'd anticipate following the continued fallout from their affair as divorce proceedings get underway – and with Hannah (Shelley Conn) seemingly all out for war with Tom, things could get messy. Neil (Matthew McNulty) obviously had a major reaction when he found out about the affair but changed tact as he professed his love for Beth and begged for her to stay. As she clearly chose to leave, could it only sour things further between the pair?

Seeing as the teenage love story of Jess (Leila Khan) and Ollie (Johnny Sanpher) was running in parallel to Tom and Beth's, it was a sad conclusion for them to end things. But having seen each other at a party where the sparks continued to fly, could they repair things even though their parents are together?
