Review

Jack Seale

Hugh Grant nearly runs off with this US drama about a happily married couple in the upper reaches of Manhattan society. He plays oncologist Jonathan Fraser, a charming, sarcastic misanthrope who gripes about all the socialising his wife makes him do — a role Grant could ace in his sleep.

But he’s not our protagonist: that would be his wife Grace (Nicole Kidman), a poised psychotherapist who delivers tough-love truths to her clients. Does she, though, have blind spots of her own?

Writer David E Kelley (of Big Little Lies fame) expertly maps out the couple’s circle — a milieu of wealth, style and bitchiness centred on a private school. So we get that Big Little Lies pleasure of revelling in the apartments and the clothes and the lifestyle, while also judging the ugliness beneath. And by the end of the first episode, the nastiness is breaking out all over.
