Episode 1: The Party

Summary

Drama following three new recruits to Belfast's police force. The arrest of young drug dealer Sandy McKnight begins to expose a criminal conspiracy involving every level of Belfast's society, from wealthy businesswoman Dana Morgan to vulnerable teenager Lindsay Singleton.

Review

David Brown

Each series of the top-drawer Northern Irish police drama seems to widen the scope, with this third run zooming out from street gangs and sectarian tensions to focus on those who really hold power in the Belfast of 2025.

Gone is the old criminal hierarchy, and in its place have come the seemingly respectable middle class: the business people, lawyers and bean counters who are smoothly enabling, and working hand in hand with, organised crime. And emblematic of this societal shift is private members’ club owner Dana Morgan (Cathy Tyson), whose ostensibly upright establishment looks set to become a key focus.

But we begin on the night shift where Stevie (Martin McCann) and Grace (Siân Brooke) are taking down known drug dealer Sandy McKnight (Jack McBride-Marshall). He’s someone who’s also on the radar of intelligence officers, most notably an enigmatic, almost George Smiley-esque figure by the name of Paul “Colly” Collins (Michael Smiley), who brings with him news of a mobile phone app that links the well-to-do with those operating in the shadows.
