According to Deadline, director Denis Villeneuve and the film's producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman have started to inform the actors who have auditioned which of them have reached the next round, which will take place in August.

No names have been mentioned in the reports, and it's also unclear how many actors are still in the race – with claims ranging from "five to seven" to a figure "in the teens".

Legendary casting director Nina Gold has been meeting with actors in the past few weeks, but according to the new reports these meetings were concerned with lesser known names who may be added to the fold alongside more established stars.

Of course, lots of names have been doing the rounds in recent months – with Jacob Elordi and Callum Turner two of the most prominent suggestions – but there is currently no official indication as to whether they are definitely in the running.

Production on the film is expected to begin at some point in 2027, so hopefully the new 007 will be unveiled before the end of this year – finally putting an end to speculation which has raged since even before Daniel Craig announced his intention to leave the role after 2021's No Time to Die.

Earlier this month, Amazon MGM Studios boss Mike Hopkins opened up about the future of the franchise, saying the team behind Bond's next outing is focused on making the character "relevant" for a new era.

"The first step was, 'Let's hire the best people in the world to bring this new story to life, this new chapter in the Bond franchise,'" he explained during an appearance on Variety's Strictly Business podcast.

"So between Denis and Amy and David Heyman and Steven Knight writing the script, we feel like we've got a world-class storytelling team there working with us."

He added:"The second thing is, we are gonna try and figure out, how does James Bond get into the next chapter and then be relevant for customers for a long period of time. And so there was still a lot of work to do.

"We're sort of in the bottom half of the first inning of bringing this to life."
