Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

A third screen adaptation of Edward Streeter's comic novel feels somewhat redundant after Vincente Minnelli's 1950 original and Charles Shyer's 1991 remake. Director Gary Alazraki's decision to give it a Hispanic makeover pays middling dividends, as Andy Garcia follows sullenly in the footsteps of Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin. Facing the prospect of a divorce from his long-suffering wife (Gloria Estefan), Garcia's exiled Cuban architect struggles to save face when his lawyer daughter (Adria Arjona) announces her imminent marriage to the son of a Mexican moneybags. The clashes between the clans raises the occasional smile, but screenwriter Billy Lopez's humour is mostly heavy handed, especially where Chloe Fineman's gauche Miami wedding planner is concerned. Garcia strikes up a nice rapport with Isabela Merced, as his younger daughter, but his bristling demeanour means its hard to warm to him or sympathise as the crassly comic situations conspire to make him look ridiculous.
