After her harrowing experience in 1950s Romania, Sister Irene moves to France and enjoys a quieter pace of life, guiding fresh-faced Sister Debra. Cardinal Conroy brings dire news - the ancient evil has escaped from Romania and is moving steadily eastwards across Europe, purpose unknown. Dave Golder

The horror universe based on the Conjuring films deviates further from its initial claims to be based on true stories with this stylish but silly sequel. The Vatican calls on Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) again when it appears she has not been successful in killing off demon nun Valak. It's 1956 and Valak, taking possession of Irene's friend Maurice (Jonas Bloquet), embarks on a pan-European killing spree that leads to a French boarding school. With a new writing and directing team in charge (including Michael Chaves, who directed The Conjuring: the Devil Made Me Do It and The Curse of La Llorona), the film is more fun than its derivative predecessor, boasting a spooky atmosphere, impressive performances and a couple of ingenious set pieces. But the plot feels like a bunch of ideas cobbled together without much internal logic, and the repetitive scary sequences feel strangely cosy.
