Robert Downey Jr follows in the footsteps of Rex Harrison and Eddie Murphy in this big-screen outing for Hugh Lofting's animal-friendly medic, this time with a menagerie of creatures brought to life by digital effects. The good doctor emerges from mourning his beloved wife to cross the globe in search of a magical plant to save Queen Victoria from a life-threatening illness, accompanied and conversing with compadres including a temperature-sensitive polar bear, a nervous silverback gorilla, a paranoid ostrich and a bossy parrot who keeps everyone in line. Sadly, the constant wisecracking from a stellar voice cast, including Emma Thompson, Rami Malek and John Cena, struggles to raise so much as a half-smile as the thin connecting narrative stumbles along. Best known for heavy-duty contemporary dramas Traffic and Syriana, writer/director Stephen Gaghan was seemingly ill-equipped to deliver an effects-driven family frolic. The result is a staggeringly charmless non-event that falls short on every level - not least Downey Jr's inexplicable attempt at a Welsh accent.
