Summary
Aspiring mime artist Marcel Marceau joins the French Resistance to save the lives of thousands of children orphaned at the hands of the Nazis, including Klaus Barbie, also known as The Butcher of Lyon. In his mid 30s at the time of shooting, you'd think Jesse Eisenberg was a bit old to be playing a teenage Marcel Marceau. But he gets away with it in what is in effect the origin story of the world-famous mime, who developed his whiteface character Bip the Clown partly to entertain Jewish families who had fled to France from the Nazis. Doctoring his passport and smudging his original Jewish name, Mangel, into something more Gallic, Marceau discovers he also has a talent for forgery and is soon heavily involved with the French Resistance, producing fake papers and spiriting refugees over the border to safety in Switzerland. Writer/director Jonathan Jakubowicz's periodically gripping drama would be even better if he weren't so fascinated with Klaus Barbie (Matthias Schweighöfer), the brutish "Butcher of Lyon" whose arrival drags attention away from Marceau. Nor does telling the story in flashback help much. Still, Eisenberg twinkles and charms as the brave teenager and gives emotional weight to a heartfelt treatment of a remarkable true story.
