Summary

Former war correspondent Martha is resigned to the grip of inoperable stage three cervical cancer. She plans to spend her final weeks in a rented property near Woodstock with a euthanasia pill obtained illegally on the dark web. While she awkwardly articulates her desire to stay in control, her friend Ingrid seeks comfort in the company of mutual old flame Damian. Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton star in this powerful euthanasia drama from Pedro Almodóvar. In the first ever English-language feature by the Spanish director, Moore plays Ingrid, a New York novelist who reconnects with old friend Martha (Swinton), who has terminal cancer. Taking control of her own death, Martha acquires a pill that will kill her and asks her reluctant friend to be close by when the time comes. Adapted from Sigrid Nunez's novel What Are You Going Through, the film raises pertinent questions about end-of-life ethics. Inbal Weinberg's production design is immaculate; reds and greens abound, while every painting and piece of furniture feels significant. The sophisticated cast features John Turturro and, most effectively, Alessandro Nivola, who appears in a single chilling scene as a local cop.
