Bromance becomes romance after a bizarre plot twist in this low-key, microbudget sci-fi comedy. In the wake of the destruction of much of life on Earth, former US president Billy (Mark Duplass) and his former advisor Ray (Sterling K Brown) are living out the post-apocalypse in a cramped survival dome, probably the last men on the planet. Carrying on the human race seems impossible until Billy spontaneously starts changing sex. Despite the outlandish concept, Biosphere doesn't descend into fratboy humour. Instead, it's a character study, entirely set in the dome with only two characters, who reference everything from Kiss of the Spider Woman to Super Mario Bros. Sadly, while star and writer Duplass's script has some big ideas and very funny moments, including a ludicrously unsexy sex scene, its uneven tone works against it. The film coyly tiptoes around many of the issues it raises, as if it's desperate not to cause offence. Meanwhile, Billy and Ray are hampered by over-engineered backstories and sub-Tarantino dialogue that strains under the weight of exposition. Crucially, the pair never once convince as people who once held political power.
