Matt Glasby

While crossing the border from Turkey to Bulgaria, a group of immigrants - including Kamal (Adam Ali), an Iraqi - are intercepted by armed men. Dogs attack, shots are fired and Kamal escapes into the forest. What follows is a near-wordless chase, as Kamal tries to evade being caught and killed, while witnessing what happens to his less fortunate compatriots. It's a nightmarish scenario, expertly conveyed by writer/director Haider Rashid, whose film hits the ground running and never lets up. Particular plaudits must go to the agile camerawork, which follows Kamal everywhere - even up a tree. The sparseness of plot and characterisation are clearly part of Rashid's overall design, but the downside is that this makes Kamal's plight harder to engage with. While the action is brilliantly conveyed, the lack of analysis or insight means that too often the viewer is left feeling like a helpless spectator to the unfolding horrors.
