Summary
Crime comedy starring Matthew McConaughey. American expat Mickey Pearson has built a lucrative drugs empire in the UK by growing marijuana in the grounds of struggling stately homes. After years in the business, he plans to shut up shop - but things unravel when news of his retirement attracts the attentions of an assortment of underworld figures all looking to become the next top dog.

Guy Ritchie returns to the world of geezers and gangsters that established him in the late 1990s, but the result is a stuttering retread of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels with little of the spark or style of the director's lauded debut feature. Matthew McConaughey stars as a drugs kingpin looking to cash out his marijuana empire, triggering schemes, plots, crosses and double-crosses by an assortment of London underworld figures all looking to become the next top dog. Cue a narrative that meanders in various directions and loses sight of itself all too often, peppered with questionable racial epithets and a seemingly wilful disregard for anything remotely resembling political correctness. That's a pity, because some of the performances are terrific (Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Eddie Marsan) and deserve to be in a film of more maturity, focus and substance.
