Summary

Grisly kills combine with precision period stylings in this refreshingly straightforward retro slasher. It's 1988, and the race for prom queen is heating up at Shadyside High School. Outcast Lori Granger (India Fowler) wants to win the crown in order to gain the approval of her mother, whose own prom was cancelled in the wake of a murder. However, Lori's got stiff competition in the form of the school's popular mean girls, namely cut-throat queen bee Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza). Meanwhile, a killer in red PVC is carving their way through the contenders - but whose side are they on? Riffing on Heathers, Carrie, Sorority Row and, naturally, Prom Night, this fourth, mostly standalone entry in Netflix's Fear Street saga works as an enjoyably uncomplicated gore-fest. While it can feel narratively thin in comparison to the ambitious 2021 trilogy, there are Easter eggs galore, and director Matt Palmer successfully re-creates the look and feel of 1980s horror films, right down to the Newman Brothers' synth-tastic score. The result is an entertainingly lean and mean slasher that, while somewhat forgettable, is an engaging evocation of a bygone era.
