Jeremy Aspinall

Director Josh Ruben's whodunnit-meets-creature feature is a tongue-in-cheek throwback to 1970s Amicus horror The Beast Must Die. In that 1974 movie, a killer lycanthrope lurking among the guests at a remote English mansion is targeted by a big-game hunter. In this playful murder mystery, the locals of a snowed-in Vermont town wind up on the menu of a hirsute menace. Thrust into an increasingly chaotic (and gory) situation is a nice-guy forest ranger (Veep's Sam Richardson), whose attempts to save the day are hindered by the motley crew of suspects - a mountain man, a redneck couple, a scientist - bickering over a proposed oil pipeline as the bodies pile up. The emphasis is on wry comedy rather than visceral terror, but the twists and turns keep coming and the ensemble cast delivers the gallows humour with deadpan aplomb.
