Summary

Animated musical drama, based on Victor Hugo's classic tale, featuring the voices of Tom Hulce, Demi Moore and Kevin Kline. Fifteenth-century Paris: when his father is arrested and mother killed, Quasimodo is raised in the solitude of Notre Dame cathedral's bell tower. Hidden from the world by his guardian Claude Frollo, the Minister for Justice, he is taken pity on by a gypsy girl called Esmeralda.

This animated version of the Victor Hugo classic is one of the best of the 1990s Disney movies. As with previous versions, it's the tale of Quasimodo, the deformed keeper of the Notre Dame bells, and his unrequited love for Esmeralda, a gypsy whose actions lead to her persecution. It's darker and more adult than previous Disney animations, but there's still room for three mischievous and mobile gargoyles - Victor, Hugo and Laverne. Tom Hulce, Demi Moore and Kevin Kline provide voices to match the poignancy of the drama. The songs aren't bad, too, and the score by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz (who went on to write the hit musical Wicked) was Oscar-nominated.
