Perhaps the archetypal “kitchen sink” drama, Shelagh Delaney’s play was adapted in 1961 but, as this 1984 revival showed, retained its zest decades later, even if what had once seemed daring and transgressive had lost a little of its power to shock.

At 10pm, Peter Egan recalls the drama, in which he played the wealthy lover of a working-class woman whose daughter gets pregnant by a sailor. With issues of race and class to the fore, it was a mainstay of the education syllabus for a reason, but has curiosity value aplenty for the more mature viewer, too.
