Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This third instalment of the pedal-to-the-metal franchise doesn't star either Paul Walker or Vin Diesel (they didn't both return as leads until Fast & Furious in 2009). Instead, Lucas Black (Jarhead) takes the lead role as a bad-boy teenager in trouble for illegal street racing, whose only chance to stay out of prison is to live with his estranged dad in Japan. On arrival, he quickly falls under the twin influences of the local yakuza and the new craze for drifting (oversteering at high speed around hairpin bends). Closer in spirit to the stylish 2001 original than the more contrived sequel, Tokyo Drift does just what it says on the tin: the locale is exotic and the race scenes are fast and furious, as are the women. Non-petrolheads will probably dismiss the film as all sound and no substance, but the boy - and girl - racers out there will love it.
