Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A petty power struggle unfolds against majestic Arctic wastelands in this spellbinding drama from writer/director Asif Kapadia. Like his Bafta-winning feature debut The Warrior, the hostile landscape is a key character and dialogue is just as sparse. Michelle Yeoh is outstanding as Saiva, an Inuit keeping big emotions under wraps. Her only company is Anja (Michelle Krusiec), a girl she's raised as her own. Each day is a struggle to survive, so when a weary Russian soldier (a typically macho Sean Bean) stumbles into their territory, it's both a blessing and a curse. The tension is so thick it could freeze as he cosies up with Anja. Not only does he threaten to whisk her away, but Saiva also struggles with her own romantic feelings towards him. Sweeping scenery heightens the claustrophobia and, while the resolution is shocking, it gives the film a resonance, like a creepy campfire story for the ages.
