James Mottram

Inspired by several true-life stories, this Oscar-nominated refugee drama is both shocking and uplifting. Senegalese cousins Seydou (Seydou Sarr) and Moussa (Moustapha Fall) leave Dakar in the hope of reaching Italy for a better life. Both carry big dreams - careers in rap music and football - but naïveté leads them into dangerous terrain. Crossing into Mali on false passports, the boys travel through Niger and Libya, when a shocking turn of events sees them separated and Seydou captured in horrifying circumstances. As hard-hitting as Io Capitano is, Italian writer/director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah) lends the film a fable-like quality, partly thanks to cinematographer Paolo Carnera's beautiful burnished images. Sarr and Fall also bring infectious energy to their roles, making it impossible not to root for them. Although coincidence drives the narrative and strains credulity at times, Garrone is skilled enough to ensure audiences are kept engaged. By the time we get to the moment Sarr declares "I am captain!" the film peaks in a triumphant crescendo of emotion.
