Dave Golder

A small-time Lancashire drug dealer finds there's no easy way out of his accelerating life of crime in this hard-hitting, nano-budget UK drama. Wes (James Nelson-Joyce) has been keeping his local supply ticking over since his mate and partner Tommy (Kyle Rowe) went to prison. But when the thuggish Tommy is released, his plans to grow the business -and his casual reliance on violence to get what he wants -leave Wes reassessing his life choices. First-time director Martin Law shoots in a style that wavers between the gritty realism of Nicolas Winding Refn's Pusher films and the darker end of the British TV crime show spectrum, before sliding into trippy impressionism for the film's climax. The extreme language is genuinely shocking at times, though the violence is far less explicit, despite its presence in the story. At the film's centre is Nelson-Joyce, who gives a convincing performance in what proves a bleak look at 2020s "broken Britain", peppered with black humour and even tantalising glimpses of hope.
