After the breakout success of Scream, a sequel was inevitable - but nobody expected it to be this good. Two years after the Woodsboro murders, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is in college, while Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) has written a true-crime bestseller about the events. That book has been made into a film - Stab - which sparks a fresh spate of murders as Ghostface wields killer movie trivia against a new set of victims. Where the first Scream excelled at skewering horror-movie conventions, Scream 2 successfully takes the rules of a sequel - higher body count, bigger set-pieces - and delivers a film that intensifies everything from the self-aware humour and the death scenes to the emotional connections between its cast of characters. Returning creative team Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson craft their scares with such care that they hit all the harder, particularly in two of the best horror sequences ever put on film: one in a crashed police car, the other in an isolated sound booth. If the main rule of sequels is that they're supposed to suck, then Scream 2 fails with aplomb.
