Broke New Yorker Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel) discovers a long-lost branch of the family in England and jets off to meet them, unaware that her rich relatives are vampires. Proving again that she's often the best thing in the projects she chooses, Emmanuel is engaging in this overwrought game of peekaboo with Bram Stoker's original Dracula - characters are named Lucy, Mina and Jonathan Harker, and the butler (played by an underused Sean Pertwee) is named Mr Fields (as in "Renfield"). Thomas Doherty makes for an unattractive chief vampire (Evie would run a mile, wouldn't she?) and the whole thing only really takes wing in the last 40 minutes or so, when the bloodletting starts and Emmanuel is asked to do more than just look confused. With a female director, writer, cinematographer and composer, the film boasts a welcome feminist subtext, and it's fitting that the female characters are the most memorable: Alana Boden and Stephanie Corneliussen are particularly good as brides of the "master". While the film doesn't work overall, the lush, faintly Hammer vibe does at least offer some visual interest.
