Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

An excellent all-black cast have their pistols at the ready in the swaggering directorial debut of British musician Jeymes "The Bullitts" Samuel. Blowing the dust off a genre that sometimes struggles to reinvent itself, this vivid, violent and irreverent western plays fast and loose with real-life historical characters. Jonathan Majors plays outlaw Nat Love, who resolves to put down his parents' killer Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) after he's sprung from jail, with their gangs charging towards a bloody battle. Samuel directs with gusto, throws in some Tarantino-esque wisecracks and knows what pops on screen. There's great work from the leads, who inject passion and integrity into a largely rollicking tale, and they are beautifully supported by LaKeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz and Delroy Lindo. But it's the magnificent Regina King who steals the show, bringing bags of attitude and style to the role of Buck's ruthless associate Trudy.
