Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The social messages may be by rote and the racial tensions unsubtle, but the fifth episode in the Purge saga is never dull. Director Everardo Gout brings a dynamic propulsion to the grim proceedings, employing handheld camera theatrics that add excitement to what is essentially an illegal immigration chronicle in reverse. As the annual Purge winds down in Texas, an organised army of white supremacists with ethnic cleansing on their minds declare the normal 12 hours of sanctioned crime is now never-ending. A state of emergency is called, martial law invoked and the rancher Tucker family must team up with their Mexican home help to get to the border before it closes. It all boils down to an Alamo-style shoot-out in the end, but the constant threat of random violence is well maintained.
