Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Love's young dream wakes up to real life in an intimate and impeccably performed romantic drama from writer/director Harry Wootliff. Laia Costa plays Elena, an arts worker whose life changes when she meets Jake, a post-graduate student and DJ played with charm by The Crown's Josh O'Connor. Passion overrides the slight age gap (Elena is 35; Jake 26) but, when they try to conceive, the strain on their relationship takes a toll. As palpable longing curdles into frustration and resentment, Costa and O'Connor hit every emotional beat with heartbreaking precision. Wootliff's direction is both fully felt and forensic, alive to the rush of burgeoning love yet also alert to the limitations of infatuation and idealisation. The result overcomes a rather threadbare narrative in the late stretch to offer a distinct and grown-up love story, with its tough and tender elements held in fine balance.
