Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Video-game hero Wreck-It Ralph (John C Reilly) is back, and heading online in a quest to save the game of his friend Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) after it's unplugged. Fans of the Oscar-nominated first film will find plenty to chuckle at during this bright, energetic sequel, which boasts numerous references to famous companies and programmes, plus satirical nods to the ways we lead our lives online. Meanwhile, the much-hyped scene featuring every single ever Disney princess is as clever as expected, both celebrating and subverting Disney's traditions. By broadening their characters' horizons, returning director Rich Moore and new co-director Phil Johnston allow them to grow beyond normal sequel trajectory. The most interesting journey is Vanellope's discovery of a female role model, voiced by Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), and the insecurity this stirs in Ralph. Despite these new elements, though, the film-makers never stray far from the bond our heroes share, and whereas many sequels simply rehash the same formula, Ralph Breaks the Internet consistently finds new places to go with its rich and hilarious universe of characters.
