David Tennant has faced up to what some fans probably knew already – he could perhaps do with a few lessons on his American accent.

The former Doctor Who star has admitted that he is engaged in some coaching via Skype in a bid to get the US drawl right for his starring role in the stateside remake of Broadchurch – re-named Gracepoint, and co-starring Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn.

Tennant revealed that he is having the lessons at this morning’s performance of his one off Absolute Radio panto Zombie-Claus.

He told presenter Christian O’Connell “I will be doing an American accent yes. I will start working on it this afternoon actually and am getting help from a voice coach over Skype from America. That's how they do it.”

Filming of Gracepoint begins next month in British Columbia.

Tennant's character is virtually identical to his Broadchurch part. One major difference will be the name: over here he was called Alec Hardy but in the US he will be known as Emmett Carver, with the plot following the ITV drama in several key respects.

Here's a clip of David Tennant’s last attempt at a US accent – the legal drama Rex is Not Your Lawyer which sadly only made it to the pilot stage.
