Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In a rousing drama inspired by real events, Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson display believable chemistry as a defiant couple in Berlin during the early years of the Second World War. The grief of losing their son compels them to campaign against Hitler in a secret but nonetheless dangerous manner. The story of modest, ordinary people making a stand against ultimate evil is incredibly moving, with Thompson's barely restrained fury complementing Gleeson's stoicism. Director Vincent Perez's film doesn't do quite enough to emphasise the gravity of their efforts, often hinting at the dangers they face rather than revealing the full brutality of the Nazi regime. Nevertheless, it provides an intriguing look at life within Germany at that time, and makes a symbolic point about the small, everyday acts of courage that would contribute to their oppressor's downfall. Be sure to have a hanky to hand for a tale that tugs at the heartstrings in its own understated way.
