The MGM+ horror series, which stars Perrineau as Sheriff Boyd Stevens and follows a group of people stuck in a nightmarish small town which is haunted by monsters at night, was renewed for a fifth and final season last week.

But the news that the show – which is the most-viewed series in the history of the network – won't be continuing beyond season 5 soon sparked backlash from some fans online.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "So @FROMonMGM is the highest rated show and they're cancelling it after S5? Hollywood has fallen, even great shows can't last. @HaroldPerrineau you and your generation are the last to rule Hollywood, just look at your Oz alumni @kirkacevedo. I grew up watching you guys. It's sad."

Responding to the tweet, Perrineau wrote: "We want to bring the best version possible to the screen. 5 seasons does that for us."

Speaking about the decision to end the series after its fifth season in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator John Griffin made clear that a five-season arc had always been the aim for the series.

"In full transparency, five seasons was always the goal, but we always wanted to let the story tell us when it was time to end," he said.

He continued: "When we reached the end of season three and the death of Jim (Eion Bailey), it felt like we reached the end of the beginning.

"Similarly, season 4 very naturally feels like the beginning of the end. We’ve had the opportunity to tell this story from the beginning the way we really wanted to tell it, with the full support of Michael Wright and everybody over at MGM. It’s rare you get to tell this type of story and give it the life you feel it needs, to let the story decide when it’s time to end."
