All six episodes of new BBC drama Waiting for the Out are now available to watch on BBC iPlayer, with viewers getting to follow the journey of Dan, a philosophy teacher who starts teaching inmates at a prison.

In doing so, Dan also find himself grappling with his own past, as his brother, father and uncle have all spent time in prison. He then begins to worry, obsessively, that he too will end up being locked up.

The series is based on Andy West's memoir The Life Inside, and stars Josh Finan, Stephen Wight, Phil Daniels and Samantha Spiro. But for those who have already got to the end of episode six, what are the chances that we will get to see a second season of the drama?

Read on for everything you need to know about Waiting for the Out season 2.

We don't yet know whether Waiting for the Out will return for a second season, as the first run has just been released, so the show's future has yet to be confirmed.

Given that the series is based on Andy West's memoir The Life Inside, and a lot of that plot's book has now been adapted, viewers may assume that it will therefore be a one-and-done run of six episodes.

However, speaking with RadioTimes.com and other press ahead of the drama's release, writer Dennis Kelly confirmed that he would be interested in returning for a second season.

Kelly said of the potential for season 2: "The truth is I talked, literally yesterday, to an executive producer and asked the same question. Because when we conceived it, we were talking about the next series, and we've been so focused on getting this down that no one's actually put their head up.

"But I'd love to do it. I'd love to do it again. I mean, if people like it, if there's an appetite for it, if Andy wants to again, if Josh wants to do it again, I'd love to. Because I really liked being with those characters. And the actors were amazing. I got fond of everyone that was doing it, but mostly I think I love those characters. I feel like I could write tons for them."

Asked whether he would have to invent new stories away from those detailed in the book, Kelly said: "There's a lot more philosophical stuff in there. There's loads of stuff in there. Andy’s story, I think we've probably exhausted, but it's not that we couldn't find more or talk to Andy about more.

"It's a difficult question, because we’d have to collaborate on what that next thing would be, because there isn’t something you can just pull out and go, ‘It’s that’. But the other side of that is, there’s loads of prison scenes in that book that we haven't even touched on, there's a ton of them."

For now, we will just have to wait for an update regarding the future of the series, but we will keep this page updated if and when we get any news.

When would a potential Waiting for the Out season 2 be released?

It's hard to say when a potential second season of Waiting for the Out would be released, given that the show has yet to be renewed.

However, were a second season to be confirmed fairly quickly, then we could imagine season two being turned around in about a year - the show doesn't rely on special effects or feature any big A-list stars, so a fairly prompt turnaround seems likely.

We would therefore expect that Waiting for the Out season 2 could arrive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the first half of 2027 - although that is just speculation at this point.

Who would return to star in a potential Waiting for the Out season 2?

Were Waiting for the Out to return for season 2, we would certainly expect Josh Finan to return as Dan, while Stephen Wight, Phil Daniels, Samantha Spiro and Sian Reese-Williams would all likely be back as his family members.

Beyond this, we could certainly see a number of the cast members playing the prison inmates returning, given how much Kelly enthused about writing for them. However, one figure who we don't expect back would be Josef Altin as Greg, as his character was revealed to have killed himself in the final episode.

It's also uncertain whether Gerard Kearns would be back as Dan's dad - he plagued Dan in visions all throughout season 1, but by the end of the run his grip seemed to have loosened on Dan's mind, meaning he may not feature quite as heavily.

For now, here's a purely speculative list of the actors and characters we could imagine returning for Waiting for the Out season 2:

  • Josh Finan as Dan
  • Gerard Kearns as Dad
  • Stephen Wight as Lee
  • Phil Daniels as Frank
  • Samantha Spiro as Mum
  • Sian Reese-Williams as Laura
  • Alex Ferns as Keith
  • Francis Lovehall as Dris
  • Steven Meo as Macca
  • Ric Renton as Wallace
  • Tom Moutchi as Junior
  • Nima Taleghani as Malik
  • Sule Rimi as Samson
  • Charlie Rix as Zach
  • Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo as Officer Stephens
