15. Louis Theroux - Drinking to Oblivion (BBC2)

A sobering doc that saw Theroux getting to know patients at King’s College Hospital in London – a specialist liver centre treating those gripped by alcohol addiction. While encountering those on the brink of self-destruction, the normally dispassionate interviewer couldn’t help but get emotionally involved in the lives of those he met, chastising the abusive boyfriend of a cider-drinking Aurelie and hugging desperate medical researcher Joe. How far we’ve come since the days of Louis largely playing it for laughs on his Weird Weekends. David Brown
