A spokesperson for Xbox has denied reports that GTA 6 is selling eight times better on PS5 than it is on Xbox Series X/S.

This comes shortly after the grand opening of GTA 6 pre-orders, which coincided with the unveiling of the different GTA 6 editions that players are able to choose from (both of which will get you some tidy GTA 6 pre-order bonuses).
You may have noticed that Sony is running a big campaign around GTA 6, claiming that the game "will play best on PS5" and even rebranding the PlayStation mobile app to match the GTA 6 colour scheme.

In the midst of all this excitement, a social media post from IGN reported, "Through IGN Finds' and commerce affiliate linking program, the data is showing that PlayStation is outperforming Xbox by a rate of 8-to-1."
This claim obviously relates to IGN’s own e-commerce platforms, the users of which, if this data is to be believed, seem to be heavily preferring the PS5 edition of the game, rather than the Xbox alternative.

Of course, nuance is a tricky thing to convey on the internet, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that some people may have got the wrong end of the stick with this statistic, and some may have assumed that the 8:1 ratio on IGN’s platforms was indicative of the whole GTA 6 pre-order picture.
Xbox is clearly keen to dispel that train of thought, with an official Xbox spokesperson providing a comment to Windows Central about the matter.
The official Xbox response states, in no uncertain terms, "This doesn’t represent pre-order data." So don't go assuming that IGN's numbers are the only ones that matter.
The Xbox quote adds, "We’ve had record orders", which certainty sounds a lot better than the picture painted by IGN’s social post.
"People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links", the Xbox spokesperson is also quoted as saying. Clearly, they don't want anyone to think they're lagging behind in the GTA 6 arms race.
It will definitely be interesting to see the GTA 6 launch play out. Which platforms will come out on top? How many units will be sold? How quickly, if at all, will the new game outstrip the GTA 5 sales numbers?
Only time will tell, on all of those questions, but we’ll be sure to keep bringing you the latest GTA 6 intel when we have it.
With the GTA 6 PC launch and GTA 6 multiplayer component still to come after the initial release, it feels like Rockstar's new game will be the main character of the gaming industry for multiple years. There's plenty of time for Xbox to sell a whole bunch of units.
GTA 6 will launch on 19 November 2026. You can order your copy using the links below:
