Review

Jack Seale

Riz Ahmed is the creator, writer and star of a drily funny comedy about Shah Latif, a young actor whom the press is convinced is the next James Bond. In reality, Shah is a struggling thesp who isn’t very good at remembering lines, has a difficult time balancing his desire for success with his self-image as an important artist, and is constantly brought back down to earth by his family, who puncture his pretensions in their Wembley semi-detached.

What starts as a fairly standard meta-comedy about acting and fame goes to some unexpected places as Shah’s persona unravels. It’s a strong mash of ideas and genres that’s attracted the likes of Maxine Peake and Patrick Stewart to the supporting cast — plus, as Shah’s cynical taxi-driving cousin, the very funny Guz Khan.
