"Top Gear" premiered as a conventional motoring magazine on BBC Two in 1977 and featured reviews of new car models and car-related issues such as road safety. A more informal approach was adopted when a new format hit TV screens in 2002. It still features reviews of new pieces of kit, but this is coupled with banter, challenges and wild road trip adventures. It is currently hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, and features a helmeted test driver known as the Stig. One of the regular features is "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" in which Clarkson interviews a celebrity before introducing footage of the guest racing around the "Top Gear" test track. Previous presenters have included Angela Rippon, Noel Edmonds, William Woollard, Tony Mason, Tiff Needell, Vicki Butler-Henderson and Quentin Willson. The current incarnation is one of BBC Two's top-rated programmes. A US version launched on the History channel in America in late 2010.
