Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise his role as the Grinch in a sequel – more than a quarter of a century after he played the iconic Dr Seuss character.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ron Howard – who directed the original film How the Grinch Stole Christmas – will also be back to helm the new instalment, with the script set to be penned by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel.

That trio are no strangers to adapting Dr Seuss, having previously collaborated on the 2003 film of The Cat in the Hat, starring Mike Myers.

It's not clear exactly what might happen in the sequel, so it will be interesting to see what kind of story can entice Carrey back to the big screen – with his only film credits in the past decade coming in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.

The first film was released in 2000 and despite not performing especially well with critics – it sits at 50% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing – it became a huge commercial hit and has endured as a festive staple ever since.

Our own Radio Times review of the film skews more positive, with critic Sloan Freer awarding it 4 stars, calling it a "seasonal spectacular" and a "magical and visually splendid tale" that "deserves to become a genre classic".

Dr Seuss's classic tale was first published in 1957 and had earlier inspired an animated adaptation in 1966 – which was the first time the character was made green.

More recently, a new animated film was released by Illumination Studios in 2018, with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the Christmas-hating title character.

We'll keep you updated as and when we hear any more information about this proposed sequel, including further casting information and possible plot details.
