We've been waiting two decades for a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada – so hopes were high that the new follow-up would be a worthy successor to the beloved original.

And early signs point to the fact that The Devil Wears Prada 2 – which sees Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci all reprising their roles – is set to be another critical and commercial hit.

The review embargo for the film lifted yesterday (Wednesday 29 April) afternoon, and at time of writing, it's score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes sits at 79 per cent based on 118 reviews – indicating widespread acclaim from critics.

Meanwhile, on Metacritic, the film has a lower score of 61 from 46 critics, which nonetheless still suggests a generally favourable reception.

Interestingly, the current Rotten Tomatoes score is actually a little bit higher than that for the original (which has 75 per cent from 194 reviews) although the Metacritic score is one point lower.

Either way, the consensus seems to be that the new film is of similar quality to the previous one, which will no doubt be great news for fans desperate to be reunited with Andy Sachs, Miranda Priestly and co.

In our own Radio Times review, we gave the film 4 stars, with critic James Mottram saying that the film was "bigger and bolder" than the original and adding that, despite some minor quibbles, it was "a thoroughly enjoyable reunion – like being reacquainted with old friends."

Elsewhere, the film also scored 4 stars in The Telegraph, The Independent, The Times and Little White Lies, while it was awarded 3 stars by The Guardian and Empire and also received positive notices in American publications such as Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to the aforementioned quartet who are reprising their roles, the cast for the sequel also includes new characters played by Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu and Bridgerton star Simone Ashley.

The official synopsis teases: "Andy Sachs returns to Runway as Miranda Priestly navigates a new media landscape and Runway's position within it.

"They reconnect with another former assistant, Emily, who is now the head of a luxury brand that possesses funding which could ensure Runway's survival."

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is released in UK cinemas on 1 May. The full soundtrack to The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to be released on 1 May alongside the film. You can listen to Runway now, wherever you stream music.
