How to watch The Odyssey – is it streaming?
No – for the time being, the film will only be available to watch in cinemas, with it having been given an exclusive theatrical release from Friday 17 July.
Of course, that is no surprise. There are few – if any – filmmakers currently working known to be as staunch defenders of the cinematic experience as Christopher Nolan, who famously insisted that his 2020 film Tenet was given a full theatrical release not long after the first round of COVID lockdowns.
Given that The Odyssey is huge even by Nolan's own standards, there will be quite some time to wait before you can expect to watch it at home. And believe is when we say that this is the kind of film that very much benefits from being on as big a screen as possible!
What is the best format to watch The Odyssey in?

Matt Damon in as Odysseus. Universal Pictures
You might have heard that Nolan's film is, impressively, the first to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras – and as such, the best possible way to watch it is on an IMAX 70mm screen.
That said, there aren't too many of those screens available in the UK – just the BFI IMAX, the Science Museum IMAX Cinema and Vue Manchester Printworks – and many of those screenings were sold out long before the film's release.
Still, there are plenty of other good options, with many other regular IMAX screens around the country as well as eight Dolby Vision cinemas. And even if you can't make it into any of those – the film is very much worth watching on any big screen!
When will The Odyssey be released on streaming?
As mentioned above, it likely won't be some time before the film becomes available to watch on streaming – in the first instance for rental and purchase on Premium Video on Demand platforms such as Prime Video.
While no official information has been released at this stage, the film is expected to continuing to perform very well at the box office and as such Universal will be in no hurry to push it out for streaming.
If we look at the example set by Nolan's last film, Oppenheimer, which was also released in mid-July, we'll probably be looking at a streaming debut of some time in November for the film – although we'll keep this page updated as and when we hear any more concrete updates.
