While everyone remembers this film about an autistic man as Dustin Hoffman's Oscar-winning triumph, the film equally belongs to co-star Tom Cruise. He plays a fast-talking, wheeler-dealer who learns that he's been cut out of his father's will and has a brother confined to an institution. What follows is a classic road movie, as the siblings take off on a cross-country trip to California in an old Buick. Hoffman's savant - a mass of baseball and airline disaster statistics, prone to hysterics if his routine is broken - is one of modern cinema's great triumphs: believable, unsentimental, often hilarious. But it's Cruise's character who has the greater emotional journey, from being selfish and impatient to protective and eventually loving. Director Barry Levinson handles the whole thing beautifully, and bagged an Oscar for his efforts, while the film itself took the best picture award.
